As I have been anticipating the change in seasons, I am very aware that my transitional wardrobe is a bit lacking. I knew I wanted to make a couple pairs of pants (boring), so I thought I would take on a new challenge and also try button-up shirts!
After using MyBodyModel for sketches, I determined that a nice chambray version and a cozy flannel version would be perfect additions to my fall wardrobe.

I had been seeing lots of pictures of the new Tarawi shirt all over Instagram (particularly inspired by Cookin’ and Craftin’), and I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to try out Muna & Broad. Am I ever glad I did!
I cut out a size D with the 2+ chest size. I chose the narrow collar and narrow sleeves. Because I am on the short side, I decided to make just two adjustments – reduced sleeve length by 2 inches, and reduced front and back length by 1.5 inches. Next time I will go with 1.5 inches for the sleeve, and I may just leave the shirt length as is – though that may depend on the material I am using.
The Tarawi instructions are PHENOMENAL. I just kept my computer handy and took things step-by-step. The level of detail was absolutely perfect for my first button-up. I particularly appreciated the suggestions about when to hand-baste, as this really helped me to feel more confident as I was putting the shirt together. And of course I used some snazzy little labels from Kylie and the Machine!

I have already worn this shirt four times! It’s comfortable, and the chambray (from my stash) will make it so versatile in my wardrobe. Because I wanted to jazz it up just a bit, I used a contrast lime green thread and buttons. Plus, I added sashiko stitching on the back yoke to really add some visual interest.

I am so pleased that Muna & Broad’s Tarawi shirt made my first button-down such an amazing success – I cannot wait to make my cozy flannel version next!
