I seriously fell in love with this pattern as soon as it came out. To be honest, such a voluminous top with a bohemian vibe is not my typical style… but I was so drawn to it that I decided to take a plunge!

I found this Manchester yarn-dyed cotton in “jade” at my local fabric shop (shout out to Z Fabrics!). It probably is just a little bit less drapey than ideal, but it was a great price for a wearable toile! (I do frequently make actual muslins, but in the case of this shirt with so much volume and ease, I felt pretty confident that my first try would fit!)
First up, I used MyBodyModel templates to sketch out how I thought this would look on my body. Based on how the top fit on the pattern models, I knew that I wanted to add just a touch of length to the peplum because crops are too far out of my comfort zone!

Based on my measurements, I decided to make a size 16. I used the long sleeve, but reduced the sleeve length by 1.25 inches (next time I will probably take off a full two inches). I also added about 1.5 inches to the peplum so that the length of the top would suit my preferences. The last adjustment I made was to make the top slit a little shorter than the pattern suggests – but I would probably change this next time. I underestimated how the structure of the interfacing in the yoke would help the neckline stay put, so having a slightly lower neckline is now more appealing to me. Ultimately I think that I probably could size down and be a little happier with the fit.

Helen’s pattern directions are seriously so well-written and specific. It almost feels like having a tutorial instead of pattern directions! I did not find anything particularly tricky because the instructions are so clear and easy to follow. I will say that if you do not like gathering, this may not be the most enjoyable pattern for you… but I am a gathering queen, so no problems for me!
Now I have to decide if next time I will make a top or go for the dress… decisions, decisions!!
